We Stand As Witness

This project explores the period of German Occupation in Jersey between 1940-1945. In particular this project is a search for the 1000’s of forced labourers who lost their lives building Hitler’s Atlantic Wall under the direction of Organisation Todt. Little trace remains of those who died - they were an unseen aspect of the Occupation as cameras were made illegal under the Nazi rule and so no photographs were taken and no names left behind. This project commemorates, documents and gives voice to their memory, through what was the once forbidden act of the photograph.
